Introduction to the Project

The overall aim of the “Re-Mapping the Americas” Research Cluster is to foster knowledge mobilization through the development of a network of junior and senior scholars and practitioners who are interested in understanding the adjustments that are being made in this hemisphere as a result of tensions between globalization, regionalization and economic integration forces as well as in response to changing security and economic policies of the regional giant, the United States. The proposed Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) and other regional trade arrangements such as the Andean Community, the Association of Caribbean States (ACS), the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR), are all having a profound impact on the development of the hemisphere. The effect has been a reconceptualization of the entire region and a redefining of its political, legal, economic and social mapping.
